  1. Information System for Monitoring Power Plant Production Indicators – Independent Development and Implementation in Croatian Electricity Company
Ivica Vukelić (Electricity Production & HEP Proizvodnja, Croatia)

HEP Proizvodnja d.o.o., a subsidiary within the HEP Group that is in charge of producing electricity, operates generation units at 25 hydroelectric power plants and 7 thermal power plants with a total of more than 80 generators. Apart from electricity, the company produces thermal energy for district heating systems in three cities and supplies steam for industrial purposes. The management of the entire „fleet” is hard to imagine without an adequate information system with integral data base, concerning the differences in the types of the production units, the fuels used and products (electricity, hot water, industrial steam). From 2005th in HEP Proizvodnja d.o.o. such a system was developed and implemented in steps according to priorities and business necessity. The system was named „Pokazatelji Proizvodnje Elektrana” (PPE) / Power Plant Production Indicators. The aim of the PPE system is to create databases of relevant data, its processing and reporting through various reports. The main task is providing support for the management to optimising work of the entire fleet and making best business decissions. Besides, the system makes it possible to interconnect and exchange data with other business applications (B2B), within and outside of the HEP Group. The application has been created on the basis of the METADATA relational model that allows almost unlimited upgrading and flexibility and imposes no restrictions in terms of monitoring and importing new data and functions. Having in mind almost unlimited expansion possibilities through data imports and functional modules as well as owing to interconnection possibilities with other applications, this information system has become a very useful tool and database for all companies in HEP Group. This is confirmed in the current company operations under the new conditions of the open energy market. The project has been developed internally by the human resources of the company with no additional costs incurred by the company. PPE application was awarding 2014. by Croatian Energetic Society with annual award Hrvoje Požar in category of realized project.

  2. Retrofitting towards nZEB – A Cyprus case study for residential buildings
Flouris Xeni, Polyvios Elefthriou and Nikos Paraskeva (Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus)

Buildings consume approximately 40% of the total energy needs of the EU and are responsible for 36% of Union’s total CO2 emissions. In the context of the Kyoto protocol and the EC’s commitment of reducing its carbon footprint, setting goals on energy savings and RES penetration for 2020 milestone, it is no wonder that buildings are included in the core focus areas of the EU’s Roadmap for moving towards a low carbon economy. Directive 2010/31/EU (EPBD recast) officially introduced the term of the near Zero Energy Building (nZEB) and set the mandatory target that all buildings constructed in the EU following the year 2020 should meet the nZEB criteria, as a means of reaching the 2020 target levels. Taking into account that the residential buildings sector is responsible for more than 60% of total energy consumed by buildings in general, volume of new constructions is below 1% (EU average) and the fact that the majority of the building stock in most EU countries has been built before any serious regulations on building energy performance had been imposed, it is evident that special emphasis in retrofitting current residential buildings to nZEB standards should be given in order to achieve the aforementioned goals. In the scope of the present study, data gathered from a previous research work were used for five representative residential buildings in Cyprus in order to estimate their energy class and the actual annual energy consumption. Energy efficiency measures (EEM) retrofitting the buildings under study to nZEB standards have been identified and quantified, the investment cost estimated and financial performance has been evaluated.

  3. Impact of the financial crisis to the penetration of broadband networks and services within EU
Spyros Polykalas (TEI of Ionian Islands, Greece); Kyriakos Vlachos (University of Patras, Greece)

The countries of the European Union are facing one of the worst financial and economic crises of the recent history. The crisis impacts several social – economic indicators with multiple effects on societies. At the same time the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies within the European Union presents significant increase, even within the period of the crisis. Although there are several studies deal with the implication of the crisis, only few of them are analysing the implications of the financial and economic crisis to the growth rate of broadband networks and services. The scope of this paper is to explore the correlation, if any, between the impacts of the financial crisis and the penetration of broadband services as well as the coverage of broadband networks both of the fixed and mobile sectors. The analysis is mainly based on the examination of several quantitative indicators relevant to broadband penetration over the period of crisis. The findings of this paper strongly indicate that on one hand there is no correlation between the impacts of the crisis and the growth of fixed broadband services penetration and broadband fixed and mobile networks coverage. On the contrary it seems that the financial crisis slowed up the penetration of mobile broadband service penetration.

  4. Services in tourism based on Vision 2020 – a chance for telecom operators
Igor Jurčić (HT Eronet, Bosnia and Herzegovina); Sven Gotovac (University of Split & FESB, Croatia); Ivan Rados (HT Eronet, Bosnia and Herzegovina)

This paper analyzes the activities that are currently being conducted on the development of new technologies: 5G mobile networks, IoT (Internet of Things) and IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). Special emphasis is placed on analysis of the current phase of development 5G mobile networks, IoT/IIoT, OTT applications and achievements of mobile telecom operators regarding these fields of interests. Croatia is a tourist country and tourism is a very important branch of the economy. In the context of this work, it will be given some proposals for telecom operators in terms of preparing themselves for further changes in following years.
